Return Of The Syclone: Specialty Vehicle Engineering’s New Release

Specialty Vehicle Engineering (SVE) is at it again bringing us a modern twist on hot rods of the past. Not long ago SVE reintroduced the Yenko name into an advanced platform using both the sixth-gen Camaro and the C7 Corvette. This time the company is bringing back GMC’s iconic performance truck, the almighty Syclone.

There are several differences between the new Syclone and its predecessor. The original truck started life in 1991 as a GMC Sonoma single cab and was fitted with numerous upgrades before the red Syclone badges were applied to the all black body. A 4.3-Liter turbocharged V-6 sent power to the ground through the 700R4 and all-wheel drive drivetrain. This combination produced 280 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque from the factory. The Syclone in factory form was capable of a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds. The truck could also run a quarter-mile run in 13.4 seconds at 98 mph.

While Specialty Vehicle Engineering might be resuing the Syclone name, it’s an entirely different beast. The build will start with a new 2019 GMC Canyon extended cab truck, and unlike the original sports truck, the customer will have the choice of either a two-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive platform. The V6 does receive a supercharger that will boost the horsepower up to 455 ponies with the help of a stainless steel cat-back dual exit exhaust system. The customer will also be able to order the truck in any factory color which is a vast change from the ’91 model.

SVE’s Syclone stays close to its roots with a boosted V6 engine under the hood and optional four-wheel drive.

The new Syclone will also receive a much-needed performance brake upgrade to make sure and bring the truck to a halt. Six-piston forged calipers will be utilized on the front with red with black Syclone graphics. Two-piece 13.6-inch diameter slotted front rotors will also be used in place of the stock units.

A sport suspension package will get the truck through the corners as it lowers the truck 2-inches up front and 5-inches in the rear. The suspension package will also include heavy-duty traction bars, heavy-duty spring bushings, higher-rated front, and rear performance shock absorbers, and a heavy-duty rear sway bar. Further performance upgrades include 20 x 9-inch front and rear five-spoke alloy wheels with Syclone graphics, and performance tires.

The body of the 2019 Syclone will look the part with a unique composite hood insert with 455HP chrome and red badges, body-color composite rocker panel extensions, Syclone door and tailgate badges, body color front grill, and rear bumper.

The interior will also get reworked according to SVE. Upgrades will include a custom seat trim package featuring red Syclone embroidered graphics on the seats. Custom front floor mats with, you guessed it, a red Syclone logo stitched in the mats. You will even receive a numbered Syclone dash plaque and two Syclone numbered key fobs.

Only 100 of these awesome trucks will be built so if you are interested you might want to contact SVE immediately. The Syclone will cost a cool $39,995 on top of the truck’s MSRP and can be ordered through a GMC dealer. We know that some of the purists are going to love it and some are going to hate it. Either way, we think that this is a cool reboot and are excited to see it on the streets. We won’t hold our breath for an LT4 powered option even though that would be epic.
