PRI 2018: Weld Racing Shows Off New Drag, Street/Strip Wheels

Weld Racing has brought a whole host of new drag racing and street/strip wheels to show to the masses here at the Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis, headlined by a new, ultra-wide drag wheel and additions the RT and RT-S lineup.

The first of its new products is an 18×6-inch Alumastar frontrunner, intended for production vehicles where large aftermarket brake kits are being utilized, as Weld’s Jeremy Clark notes. Such brakes have made its traditional 17-inch front wheel a challenge to accommodate, so Weld returned to the drawing board to produce not only a wheel of a size that will accommodate such brake packages, but do so at a feather weight. Weld did considerable pocket machining in the wheel center area, allowing it to come in at just 13.25-pounds. This wheel is intended for all modern muscle cars, including sixth-gen Camaros, C5/C6/C7 Corvette, ZR1 and ZL1 Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V, and Challenger/Charger Hellcats and Demons.

It’s next offering is a new RT-S S72, which combines impressive styling with a race-winning design. These will be available in 15-, 17-, 18-, and 20-inch diameters and widths up to 18-inches for your street/strip applications. Weld can also equip these with a single beadlock in 15- and 17-inch diameters to get the look and function you demand for your high-horse vehicle. A forged wheel, the S72 is a three-three-piece design and has the durability to handle your typical road driving environment.

“We had a lot of cool design we looked at, and some play into what we’ve traditionally done and this one kind of fell outside of that,” Clark shares. “We said ‘let’s do something a little different, do something wild.’ This is more of a multi-spoke wheel, but what makes it really cool is that you look at it and you can really see two different designs — especially when it’s on the car. It plays tricks on the eyes.”

Weld has also added to its RT line with the new Full Throttle rear wheel — the first addition to the lineup in over a decade — to compliment its newer Full Throttle frontrunner. Available in 15-inch diameter and widths up to 18-inches, these can come as non-beadlock or single or dual beadlock.

The Alpha-1, a one-piece, hub-less, lightweight drag wheel intended for smaller drag radial tires and the like.

On the pure drag racing side, Weld is showing off its Alpha-1 wheel, which is modeled off of the innovative 16×16 Delta-1 and its hub-less design and lightweight construction commonly seen in the nitro and Pro Modified ranks, but in a smaller package for radial tires and the like.

And lastly, as a response to customer demands from the drag racing community, Weld stretched the limits — literally — of the tooling at its Kansas City, Missouri facility to produce the widest race wheel it has ever produced: a 16×18-inch behemoth that allows for the ultimate in tire contact patch. This new offering comes in 4-, 5-, and 6-inch backspacing.
