On Core Performance: Volant Air Intake

The performance world, including the one occupied by trucks, is made up of extremes. On one hand, we have farm trucks. The kind that spend their time actually on the farm (or ranch), running in a harsh environment that includes all manner of dust and debris. For this application, you need maximum filtration to keep all those harmful particles out of the engine. You know, the kind of dirt and dust particles that play havoc on things like ring seal and engine life. Remember, the only good air is clean, filtered air.

The flipside of the performance equation is the notorious Farm Truck, a street (drag) race vehicle cleverly disguised as a worn out work truck. When maximum performance is the name of the game, racers often sacrifice filtration for flow.

The truth is most street trucks fall somewhere between the two extremes of full race and full farm. What most trucks need is an air intake system that offers the optimum combination of flow and filtration. Enter the Volant air intake.

Looking over the spec sheet on the Volant air intake, we were impressed by a number of features, including ease of installation, performance, and protection.

The Volant lineup (like the one for our 6.0L Chevy truck) was designed for simple replacement of the factory air intake — some systems in as little as 20 minutes. Extra airflow is beneficial, but not if it comes with installation difficulties. As illustrated by the photos and attending captions, the installation procedure was simple enough even for the first timer, an important point given the popularity of performance air intakes.

In terms of potential and performance, there is no contest between the high-flow tubing and air box offered by the Volant design and the factory air intake. The premium filter box helped direct cold air to the air intake and protect the filter from engine heat, moisture, and debris. Maximum filtration was achieved using Donaldson Powercore filtration technology. The Powercore relied on sub-micron, Ultra-Web nanofibers to combine the ultimate in flow and filtration.
