It seems like we spend a lot of time talking about the Trackhawk because it’s the newest and greatest out there from Jeep. Actually, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is currently the swiftest and fastest production SUV in the world, so there’s a good reason we in the automotive industry haven’t been able to stop talking about it. Today, we take a little break fawning over the modern Grand Cherokee and take a look back at one that was built in 1998, when the Grand Cherokee Limited.
This is a second generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, built in 1998 during the time when luxury SUVs were all the rage. It came with ‘the big motor’, the 5.9L 360 cubic-inch V8 245 HP and 345 lb/ft of torque. During its time, it was the first fast SUV, beating the Mercedes ML55 to the market by over a year. Only about 14,000 were made, and not many survived, especially not in this good of condition.
Not only is this Grand Cherokee a great example of the SUVs of the era, it’s in astounding condition for having almost 200k miles on the clock. The owner likes to use this SUV for both off-roading and on-road use, and he likes to go quick. He’s got several bolt-ons, as well as extensive suspension and brake work to make his Jeep extremely peppy and comfortable on and off the road.
The only thing lacking about the current setup is the old school transmission that doesn’t do these Grand Cherokees any favors, and the amount of effort needed to control the steering. Otherwise, this is one Jeep Grand Cherokee that has been done right! While it’s not wild and out like it’s newest little brother, it’s a very respectable street vehicle.
