The EPA’s war against motorsports has been the hot topic in this industry for over a year now. back in July of 2015, the EPA introduced a proposal which would prohibit street vehicles to be ‘converted’ into race vehicles — i.e. you can’t modify your own car with most aftermarket parts. While the EPA has withdrawn their proposal, they continue to push more regulations, and their push for overreach seems never-ending. The SEMA Action Network has been a great advocate for the other side, pushing back against the EPA, rallying support, enlisting help from politicians, and keeping the public informed.
One of the latest announcements from SAN is that an amendment has been introduced to block funds for the EPA that they want to use to enforce provisions on modified vehicles. Read about this in their release below.
Official Release:
U.S. Representative Patrick McHenry introduced an amendment to the fiscal 2017 spending plan for the Interior Department and U.S. EPA. The bipartisan amendment “prevents funds from being made available to the EPA for the purpose of being used to enforce certain provisions of the Clean Air Act on vehicles modified for sole use in competitions or regulate parts used to make modifications to vehicles used solely for competition.”
“SEMA thanks Representative McHenry for his continued leadership on this issue,” said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. “We will continue to work with the Congress on a long-term solution to the EPA’s position, which we believe is passage of the RPM Act.”
The House is scheduled to consider the amendment next week with the intent of finalizing the full bill before the long summer recess.
