Over the many years of development, the Mustang has grown into one of the ultimate muscle cars ever made. In recent years, Ford has elevated the idea of an American muscle car to include technology and agility, and aftermarket builders are turning these machines into absolute monsters. A good example of this is the Road to Racing Mustang Savage 660.
The RTR Mustang is built on the Mustang GT platform, starting with a 5.0L Coyote engine, and only getting better from there. While this powertrain would normally mean 435-horsepower for the pony car, the RTR supercharger brings it to a 693-horsepower and 608 lbs-ft of torque output. With this extra power, it is more powerful than the Mercedes E63 AMG that makes 612-horsepower and 627 lbs-ft of torque with its 4.0L V8. How does this add up in a drag race though?
While the Mustang RTR gets a jump off the line on the AMG, the E63 quickly passes the Mustang thanks to superior traction coming from its AWD grip. In this race, the Mustang RTR makes a somewhat wimpy 12.99-second pass in the quarter mile, while the E36 does much better with a 11.4-second quarter mile pass. With these kinds of numbers, the Mercedes E36 definitely out muscles the modified Mustang.
Since the car doesn’t have a horsepower advantage to start with, has a little trouble off the line, and still absolutely smokes the tuned Mustang, we think it’s earned itself an honorary muscle car title.
