For the price point, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 is the car to beat right now. It’s possible that it might have a Ford challenger step into the ring, is these spy shots are any indication of things to come.
In one of the images, we can clearly see a V8 in what looks like a Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang body. It’s expected that the a supercharged version of the 5.2L flat-plane crank is in cozied up in the engine bay. The blower looks very similar to those used in the Ford Performance supercharger kit on the Mustang GT. This kit is said to make 670 horsepower when paired with a 5.0L V8, so there’s a lot more power to be made when paired to a 5.2L that already makes 526 horsepower and 429 lbs.-ft. of torque.
So could this be the GT500 that made 650 horsepower in its prior form? There’s no certain way of knowing, but there was a Shelby Mustang prototype rolling around with the Camaro ZL1 a few weeks ago.
Ford could also be testing a supercharger kit for the GT350, but the GT500 would be a lot more likely to knock the ZL1 down a few pegs. The Shelby GT500 also celebrates 50 years in 2017, so the timing would be appropriate!
