This immaculate looking 2017 Grand Sport is heading to auction with a salvage title after the original owner’s insurance company decided to declare it a total loss…after a rock his the undercarriage.
When you think of a totaled car, you probably don’t have something that looks like this 2017 Grand Sport in mind. A user under the ID of cdm85-251 posted on Corvette Forum explaining why this perfect looking car is now totaled.
“I had the misfortune of being on an extremely busy interstate about a month ago when a vehicle in front of me went over a large rock or chunk of something VERY hard. This interstate is eight lanes wide where I was at and vehicles were all around me doing 70+/- mph, so I had nowhere to go and I couldn’t stop without causing accidents for others. I tried to straddle it, but it hit a number of places under the car, but luckily it missed anything with fluids. One big problem right now is the dealer has shown me pictures of a rear structural member that has a crack. They are calling it a rear transmission tunnel and indicating it is a non-serviceable part, not offered by Chevrolet. $7,600 damages without buying this part and the associated labor. Anyone have any similar experience?
I may end up with a totaled car that still looks perfect.”
The problems really started when the insurance company refused to believe that the part wasn’t fixable, while the dealership was saying the frame could not be repaired by them, or any other Chevrolet center. This prompted a lot of back and forth between Chevrolet and the insurance company. The insurance company suggested welding a plate over the damage, but the integrity of the frame would still be compromised.
After the owner went through quite a bit of a headache caused by the insurance company, they ended up declaring the car a total loss.
The nearly perfect 2017 Corvette will now head to a salvage auction in Iowa, and the forum user ended up walking about with a 2018 Grand Sport.
