This feels a little bit like a betrayal, but we’ll hold our judgement, for now. An internal document at GM (since removed from the internet) made it rounds that address “Passenger Car Engines for GMNA.”

On the very last entry, the long talked about LT5 small block is listed by GM as a GAS 8 CYL, SIDI, DOHC, VVT, ALUM, GM with the code “Y”, which we all know means Corvette family.

The DOHC structure has been avoided in the past on the venerable GM small, but it seems like they’ve worked it out. While we’re skeptical about what this will mean for the traditional deep breathing GM engine, the DOHC design will allow GM to have more freedom when it comes to variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust. The pushrod engines are limited to a set vlave timing with a single cam engine.

How GM will manage to fit a DOHC engine under the low lying Corvette hood will be interesting. Then again, they didn’t seem to struggle too much with the supercharged atop a LT4, so maybe we’re just looking for reasons to be skeptical.
