We felt your judgement as you were reading that headline, but the definition of Sports Cars as it pertains to sales is coming from Ford in this instance. That being said, if you classify the Ford Mustang as a Sports Car, it would be the best selling one on Earth.
The Ford Mustang is as American as apple pie and baseball, so you can’t color us shocked at the idea that it sells in large numbers in the United States, but it is a little interesting that it has achieved world domination. Since it’s introduction fifty years ago, it has become an institution, and Ford has done a lot to move its branding into the global market. Apparently, that has paid off. According to the figures released by Ford, the Mustang is the best selling sports cars on the planet with 150,000 sold in the United States, over 4,500 sold in the UK, and non-US market brother of 101% in 2016.
While this is a win for the muscle car, er, sports car crowd, but there is a good question to ask — how many of these are actually V8s? The answer is a whopping 70%, or 3,150 of 4,500 sold are V8 Mustangs. So not only are people feeling the love for American sports cars, the V8 is feeling it too! This is probably the best part of the news to celebrate as many have been worried about the popularity and practicality of the V8 in recent years — but it would seem like not a lot of people are that interested in downsizing, so that’s a win.
