As we reported a few months back, the Corvette plant has suspended plant tours for 18 months, and now they’ve suspended Corvette orders until December. The reasons might be along the same line, we suspected they were hiding a big change in their models, but it might be the plant’s retooling that’s really to blame — that’s at least the reason they’ve stopped taking 2018 orders.
The production at the GM Bowling Green, Kentucky plant is being paused for the next three month for plant upgrades so they can finish construction on the new high-tech paint shop. Or that’s the reason they’ve giving for the shutdown, but many believe they are prepping the assembly line for a new mid-engine Corvette.
If you’re worried about dealers pulling the incentives and discounts buyers have been enjoying, you might not have much to worry about. Many are still reporting that they’re being offered private deals on 2017 Corvettes that are already sitting on dealer lots. These offers typically add up to around $3,000 off most versions, or up to $5,000 Grand Sport or Z06 models with carbon ceramic brakes.
What this means for 2018 Corvettes in terms of pricing and offers is unclear. It could potentially mean that fewer incentives will be offered to buyers since demand will exceed supply due to the halt. That’s all yet to be seen, so we’ll keep following to see how this all shakes out, and hopefully, GM has some surprises in store in the next few months.
