Like one of the more exotic European sports cars, the Paddle Shifter allows you to upshift or downshift your automatic transmission without taking your hands from the steering wheel. Designed to work with any automatic four- or five-speed transmission, the paddle shifter mounts to any steering wheel with a five- or six-bolt adapter and gives you ultimate driving control.
“Installation is pretty easy,” explains Stanley Poff from TCI®, who has a unit in his own 1968 Camaro. “It is all self-contained. You take your steering wheel off, bolt on the paddle shifter with the adapter and bolt your steering wheel back on. The paddle shifter is powered off the horn relay instead of dry cell batteries, so you don’t ever have to worry about changing batteries, and it always works. Then, all you have to do is go in and configure your software in your
Transmission Control Unit so that the paddle shifter works in manual mode. And finally, you install a toggle switch so that you can switch the transmission from fully automatic to manual mode and use the shifter whenever you want.”
In addition, if you are already using the new TCI® Transmission Control Unit, the installation is as easy as plug and play. The hookups for the paddle shifter are already built into the unit, so all you need to do is plug the shifter plug into the transmission control unit, install your toggle switch and tell the unit (through the software wizard) that the paddle shifter is installed.
“It’s really compact and adds to the look of your interior,” Poff adds. “Ours is one of the smaller paddle shifters on the market, and I was amazed at how well it works without interfering with your signal lights or anything. Plus, it’s black steel and really adds to the look of just about any car.”
