From the Sizzler® to the PRO-X™, TCI® is the industry leader in high-performance transmissions. A TCI® transmission is superior in both form and function. Each transmission begins with an in-depth inspection of all the components and ends with the assembly of one of the best performing transmissions available. TCI® transmissions prove daily on both the race track and the street that they are second to none.
Technology is the key
TCI® Super StreetFighter™ transmissions are designed with the street/strip enthusiast in mind. The C-4 transmission can handle over 600hp/600ft-lbs from the engine and the factory pump is remanufactured to the TCI® rigid specifications. This transmission has a six pinion front planetary which is much stronger than the stock unit’s three-pinion front planetary to increase the load-holding capability.
Since any friction in the transmission greatly contributes to horsepower loss to the rear wheels, TCI® installs thrust bearings for much smoother operation. In addition, each C-4 has a Trans-Scat® Kit installed to increase the main line pressure and to reduce shift times. Both of these factors provide reduction in wear and more positive shifting characteristics. The transmission clutches are Alto Red Eagle and are manufactured with materials that limit clutch slippage. The six clutches (instead of only four in stock configuration) provide a 50% increase in high gear clutch holding capability.
All the transmission steels are Kolene treated and provide better heat transfer, which prevents warping under high stress pressure. The intermediate band is lined with Alto Red Eagle material and the intermediate servo is a TCI® Jumbo servo with an increase in surface area which provides more force to the band. The rear band is a Kevlar lined band, and each unit has new bushings and seals installed.
To actually see the quality of the C-4, take a look at the following photo sequence of the assembly at the TCI® facility and you will agree that this transmission--like all the other transmissions designed and assembled by TCI®--is the best high performance transmission in the market place.
The building process begins with the pre-assembly of the clutch drum.
Here you see the clutch disc assembly being put in place. The clutch
discs are comprised of Red Eagle friction plates and Kolene steel
plates to provide the best performance and long operation. |
This photo shows a comparison between a factory clutch drum (on
the left) and the heavy-duty reinforced drum (on the right) that’s used
in this transmission. It’s easy to see the difference between the two.
The reinforced drum is just another advantage afforded the C-4
transmission for strength and long life. |
The main assembly of the C-4 starts with the rear low drag planetary
assembly (shown here) being installed. |
The rear planetary is put into place. |
The assembly and installation of the rear planetary assembly is
followed by the installation of the front planetary assembly which is
a modified 6 pinion design (shown here) that replaces the
stock 3 pinion planetary. |
This photo shows the clutch pack and front planetary assembly
being installed. |
Next comes the intermediate bands |
This photo shows the governor assembly and the
output shaft being installed. |
Next is the placement of the pump assembly. This is a close-up of the
pump cover that’s shows the Teflon rings that are part of the assembly.
The Teflon rings are an addition to the shaft that provides for less wear
and excellent sealing characteristics. |
The pump assembly is put in place. |
Here is a look at the input shaft used in the C-4. It is a specially made
heavy-duty billet hardened shaft that provides maximum torque capability. |
The pump assembly is placed into the housing and bolted in place. |
To keep the pump secure during the installation of the bell housing,
the pump assembly is locked down with a set screw. |
The complete transmission drivetrain has been installed, and now
the valve body is ready for installation. Every valve body, like all
the parts in a TCI® transmission, is fully tested for
quality and functionality. |
Prior to valve body installation a specially designed plate is bolted
on so the hydraulic circuit can be tested for integrity. |
Now the valve body is installed |
Next comes the valve body filter |
A TCI® trans oil pan is installed and torqued
to the recommended values |
Bolting on the tail housing is the final assembly step. In this photo, note the intermediate billet servo on the far right.
The servo used in the C-4 is the largest currently available and provides increased holding power of the
intermediate band which provides an even stronger and more efficient transmission.
