The Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn., always seems to produce a nail-biting thriller whenever the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour pays a visit, and Sunday night’s 9th Annual Labor Day Klash was no different.

Johnny Scott, who clinched the 2010 DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year Award one race earlier, raced his way into the redraw and drew the pole position for the 40-lap WIX Filters “A” Main and led the first three laps.

Mike Sorensen, who pocketed $4,100 with a victory the previous night at the Deer Creek Speedway, powered around the outside of Scott to take the lead on lap 4.

Sorensen paced the action through lap 10 but Steve Wetzstein found his way to the point after a few laps of door-to-door racing with Sorensen and proceeded to build a six-car-length lead over the field using the shortest route around the 1/3-mile dirt oval.

Meanwhile, Jon Tesch was grinding away at the high side cushion and making his way to the front from the 15th starting spot. He got around Scott for third on lap 19, and then passed Sorensen for second three laps later but Wetzstein’s quick pace and thick lapped traffic made cutting into the leader’s advantage a difficult task.

Tesch struggled for two laps to get around the lapped car of Doug Hillson, but Hillson wound up giving Tesch the break he needed when mechanical problems forced him to stop on the racing surface to bring out the race’s only caution on lap 33.

Back under green, Wetzstein and Tesch drove away from the field to battle for the win by themselves. With Wetzstein still way down low and Tesch running way up high, the two streaked down the back-stretch and front-stretch each lap side by side.

Tesch edged in front to lead lap 37 and the “Wizard of Watertown” never relinquished the lead again as he crossed beneath flagman Ryne Staley’s checkered flags less a car-length ahead of Wetzstein.

It was Tesch’s third $3,000 triumph in the last six days after going winless for the season until taking a rain-shortened win on Tuesday in Marshalltown, Iowa, and his second career win in Kasson.

Wetzstein earned a healthy runner-up paycheck to help alleviate the heartbreak while 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn finished third ahead of Scott.

Zack VanderBeek failed to qualify for the main event the previous night, but made up for it Sunday night as he climbed to fifth at the finish after starting 20th on the 26-car grid and earned the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award by passing one more car than Tesch.

Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Jason Cummins, Rodney Sanders, Sorensen, Bobby Swanson and 2010 Dodge County Speedway track champion Josh Angst.

For the drivers chasing Jason Hughes in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship presented by Bad Boy Mowers, it was a rare opportunity to help narrow the points gap.

Second-ranked Ryan Gustin finished 11th in the main event, holding Hughes to a 12th-place finish and his first finish outside of the top-10 in the first 14 events of ‘The Hunt.’

Hughes’ advantage is now 85 points over Gustin with five races left to determine the 2010 USMTS National Champion. Tommy Myer lost ground but is still third, 123 markers behind the leader. Fourth is VanderBeek (-126), followed by Krohn (-213), Kelly Shryock (-238), Sanders (-308), Dereck Ramirez (-326), Tesch (-354) and Scott (-371).

The Southern Iowa Speedway welcomes back the USMTS Modifieds on Monday, Sept. 20, for the 7th Annual Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Challenge. The event, which was rained-out on Sept. 1, will be the 32nd time the series has visited the historic “Mahaska County Monster.”

Ryan Gustin won the last time when the series invaded the semi-banked half-mile oval on May 26, but Kelly Shryock owns the most wins at Osky with 11 triumphs to his credit, but the last of which came in August 2006.

Local favorite Brad Pinkerton has won three of the last six events at Osky and four overall. Two-time winners include Jason Krohn, Tommy Myer, John Van Den Berg and Chris Spieker. Drivers with one win include Al Hejna, Jason Hughes, Zack VanderBeek, Mark Noble, Bruce Hanford, Dan Bohr and Tony Fraise.

Also on tap will be the Dart Iron Man Challenge for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

Gates open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and racing starts at 7:30.

The 2010 season USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour will conclude at the 12th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23-25, at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., where the 2010 USMTS National Champion will be crowned.

There has been plenty of discussion in the MOPAR community about Chrysler reviving their Dodge brand. It has been well known that they were working on new logo designs, but until now no one was certain what it might look like. The new dodge logo was revealed today on the 2011 Dodge Durango. The 2011 Dodge Durango will go on sale in the fourth-quarter of 2010.

On a warm August night in Dillon S.C. Brennan Poole has accomplished what no other driver has been able to do in 2010 and that is to capture more than one win.  Poole collected his fifth UARA victory of the season and he did it in style.

The Four Cylinders were the first feature of the night. Kevin Jackson and Gregg Whitley battled all night long and kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Jackson led the first 20 laps until Whitley passed him on the low side going down the backstretch. Whitley never look back as he won his sixth race of the year and a $500 check. Jackson had to settle for second, and Emory Herring finished third after making repairs on his car all day. Leon Vinson finished fourth, and Brian Owens rounded out the “top five.”

UARA Rookie contender Clint King had to retire from the race before it even started. His team worked furiously to fix a failed rear end, but could not finish in time for the race.

Garrett Campbell collected his third Sunoco Pole of 2010 at 16.368 with R.A. Brown on the outside at 16.368.  The scoring computer breaks down lap times beyond the thousandths and thus Campbell was on top of the list.  It is amazing that two drivers could have such very, very close times.

Campbell would take the lead in the beginning but not without serious pressure from Poole.  On lap 11 caution one would fly as Michael Rouse spins coming out of turn two.  The field will go back to green but caution two will fly once again for Rouse as his car comes down the front stretch with blazes pouring out from under the rear end on lap 24.  The car will blaze all the way to the backstretch where Rouse will bring it to a halt and to the attention of the track/fire crew.

On a night of bizarre circumstances during the cautions, during the middle of caution two Julia Dawson comes to a stop on the frontstretch with apparent problems on the front suspension of the car.  Julia will head to the pits to the attention of the Don Satterfield led crew for repairs and return to the track to bring home a tenth place finish.

When the green flies Campbell sets the pace and still feels the pressure of Poole.  Brown who had been running third up until this point is slowing and will end his night on lap 42 in the pits.  Poole will continue his quest for the lead and gain it on lap 47 with the field in pursuit.

Caution three flies on lap 49 as the car of Tyler English erupts in a cloud of smoke.  During this caution the Campbell car comes to a stop in turn four.  It is determined that Campbell has suffered a broken ball joint and his night will end on lap 55 under the caution.  Campbell will bring home the ARbodies Hard Luck Award for this race.

Poole sets a blistering pace that no other driver seems to be able to keep and heads out into the horizon.  As Poole is on his journey Coleman Pressley, Kyle Grissom Lee Tissot, Matt Kurzejewski, Scott Turlington, Robert Johnson, Logan Bunning, J.J. June and Ronnie Basset Jr. are the remainder of the top ten and all fighting for positions.

Kurzejewski will head to the pits with a engine problems on lap 84.  The fans are thrilled as a battle royal is going on with Turlington and Johnson.  Lap after lap these two young men are aiming for the same piece of real estate.  Johnson will finally take the spot from Turlington on lap 96.  Johnson’s good run will earn him his 5th Rookie of the Race honor for 2010 much to the pleasure to his beaming mom Lisa and dad Junior.  Johnson would also capture the G Force Shift of the Race having gained 8 positions from his 13th place start.

Poole is still taking what appears to be a Sunday drive out front as Pressley and Grissom heat things up battling for second position.  They will be nose to tail, side by side for many laps and Grissom will take the spot on lap 114 leaving Pressley in his wake.  Grissom will have his eyes set on Poole and the pedal to the metal.

Poole says no way friend as he will end the night with a good lead over Grissom.  Pressley, Tissot and Johnson round out the top five.

Local Dillon Rookie contender Logan Bunning would  bring home an impressive 6th place finish in his first UARA start.

Kevin Blanks will be the Comp Cams Engine Builder of the race for the fourth time of 2010 for the powerhouse he prepared for the Poole car.

The Street Stock feature was the last race of the night, but had a thrilling finish. Chad Lockamy led the first lap before being passed by Randy Hall. Randy Hall and AJ Hyatt fought each other all night. Hall led 20 laps and Hyatt led 9 laps. On Lap 22, the two drivers made contact in turn four as they battled for the lead. With only eight laps to go, Hall charged through the pack to finish second. AJ Hyatt won his first career as he was welcomed to Victory Lane with a shower of Gatorade. Hyatt also received a $500 check. Ricky Locklair rounded out the “top three”, and Ken McClary finished fourth. Chad Webster finished fifth.

The NMCA Edelbrock Muscle Car Nationals, the #1 all-domestic muscle car show in the U.S., rolled into the Motor City last weekend with a very successful event showcasing the best in muscle car performance.  The 4th Annual JE Pistons NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan, saw huge fan attendance as well as very strong racer & show car participation.  Detroit area fans got their moneys worth with great racing, an incredible display of cars in the show and a 300+ mph jet car exhibition!

Drag Racing:

As usual…all the cars and all the stars of NMCA were in attendance with strong showings from the fastest classes like Scorpion Performance Pro Street and Mickey Thompson Super Street to nostalgia race classes like Indy Cylinder Head Nostalgia Super Stock and FSC Nostalgia Muscle Car.  NMCA fans came to see all the wild heads-up and wheels-up classes and they weren’t disappointed!  Supercharged, nitrous assisted, turbocharged, and naturally aspirated…the NMCA Michigan event had it all.  The muscle  car movement is in full swing with classic muscle and modern muscle creating a great show for NMCA fans!

Car Show:

The TREMEC NMCA Car Show once again showcased some of the finest hot rods and muscle cars in the U.S. and the quality of the vehicles was incredible.  Car show director, Ron Fetter, and announcer, Dave Farley, entertained the NMCA car show crowd in the Trim Parts Awards Pavilion, where over 100 awards were given away throughout the weekend.

Manufacturers’ Midway & Swap Meet:

The NMCA takes pride in assembling some of the best automotive manufacturers’ midways in motorsport and this event did not disappoint.  Some of the companies on the midway include JE Pistons, Trim Parts, ATI Performance, Harland Sharp, Ford’s Diesel & Power Tour, Amsoil and Roush Racing.  This event also featured a used parts swap meet.

“The Batesville Bullet” Wendell Wallace outgunned the competition on Friday night at Beebe Speedway (Beebe, Arkansas) to gain his first COMP Cams MSRA Super Late Model win of the 2010 season.

Via passing points, Jon Mitchell earned the JFR Graphics pole position for the 30 lap feature, which paid $2,000 to win.  He was joined on the front row by Shane Stephens.  Mitchell would snag the lead at the drop of the green flag as Billy Moyer Jr., Wendell Wallace, and Brandon Smith joined the pursuit.

Mitchell would lead early in the feature before rearend issues caused him to start slowing as the event progressed.  On an early race restart, Wendell Wallace would race past Mitchell to take the lead as Moyer Jr. soon followed to move into the third spot.  As Wallace and Moyer Jr. began to battle for the lead, a pair of drivers were on the move as 12^th starting, Bill Frye, and 14^th starting, Curtis Cook, worked through the pack.

As the race continued, Wallace would slowly begin to creep away from the pack and would go on to claim the feature win over Billy Moyer Jr., Bill Frye, Curtis Cook, and Joey Mack.

With his second place finish, Billy Moyer Jr. won the RiceTec Summer Showdown and claimed the $1,000 top prize for his efforts.  Jon Mitchell won $500 from GRT Race Cars for being the top performing GRT competitor in the miniseries.  Bill Frye won a Fast Shafts Driveshaft, while Jon Kirby received an Integra certificate for a shock rebuild and Joey Mack received an Integra certificate for a Spring Package.

Dewaine Hottinger received the Quarter Master Hard Luck Award after a broken ball joint in heat race action while leading, forced him to a b-main, where he would sustain heavy damage to his car in a melee.  He would use a provisional to start at the back of the feature and would retire early with a badly wounded entry.

Heat race action was topped by Jon Mitchell, Billy Moyer Jr., Wendell Wallace, and Shane Stephens, while Terry Henson won the b-main.

The COMP Cams MSRA Super Late Model tour will take a week off before making its inaugural trip to New West Plains Speedway (West Plains, Missouri) on Saturday, September 11^th for the 20^th Annual Kuntz & Co. Fall Nationals.

McDorman, a longtime Chevrolet dealer and passionate collector, will sell his personal collection of 150 superior cars at no reserve. Included in the McDorman offering is the most complete assemblage of Corvettes in the world, featuring one Corvette from every model year 1953 to present and 12 serial #1 Corvettes.

Among the Corvettes crossing the block are Bunkie Knudsen’s 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray and the Pink Pearl – a specially built 1964 Corvette Sting Ray ordered by Knudsen for his wife, Florence. Mecum will also auction a 1938 Chevrolet Cabriolet designed by General Motors of France during an overseas styling exercise. Of the two prototype Chevrolet vehicles designed, this car – featuring unique European influences – is the only survivor, making it a truly unique piece.
