Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something else comes along and you realize you certainly have not. There’s always a special edition out there you’ve never heard of, or maybe forgot about over the years, and then they turn up. A good example of this is the 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA notchback, and one recently turned up on Craigslist, and it caught our eye.
There was somewhere between 649 to 718 of these somewhat odd coupes built, so you’ve probably never seen one in person. This $9,500 car is made of a fiberglass decklid made in Auburn Hills, Michigan by Auto-Fab. The hatch still opens as normal, so the extra piece is purely a visual addition.
The other unique part about the notchback coupe was the integrated head restraints built into the rear seat design — this was not a feature found in any other 1988 Firebird. It’s hard to understand why Pontiac would go through the trouble of making this design for just these particular oddball models, but the little variations make it unique. The seller claims that only 50 notchbacks were made with TPI, but that’s a little difficult to confirm, and would unusual if true.
This car is not without issues, it’s pretty high-mileage for a collectible with 126,000 miles on the clock. It is powered by the original Chevy 350 5.7L engine with tuned port injection. There’s also very few pictures and the seller describes it as in need of “some cleaning and a little TLC”, which is startling considering they wouldn’t even pull the car out of the garage to take pictures. So, the price tags seems like quite a stretch, but that’s really up to buyers to decide.
