Here’s something we’ve never seen before: There is currently a campaign to fund a real driver for the very real NASCAR Aarons 499 Sprint Cup Series race on May 4 with money that doesn’t actually exist.
Apparently this is all a campaign to raise the awareness of a virtual currency called Dogecoin. Virtual currency is a relatively new phenemenon where people are inventing their own “money” that exists only in computers but can be used to buy real things. You may have heard of Bitcoin, which is the most recognizable name in virtual currency right now, but it has it’s own problems. Dogecoin is smaller than bitcoin, but their mascot is a dog (Doge), so hey, they’ve got that.
But what’s cool is that a group of people started a very successful online campaign to be the main sponsor on driver Josh Wise‘s car for the Atlanta race. The rendering above is a Ford, but Wise currently races a Chevrolet for Phil Parson’s racing. The promotion reached it’s goal of raising $55,000–which is something like 67 MILLION Dogecoins!–so it looks like all signs point to go for this actually happening.
By the way, the final paint scheme hasn’t yet been determined. If you want to try your hand at designing the graphic package for a Cup car, you can enter the contest to design the Dogecoin scheme. Check it out here.
