Most regard Pontiac as the pioneers of the muscle car because in 1964, they took the big car 389 engine and dropped it in the mid-size LeMans. They continued that trend in 1965, and quite a few years to come, as evidenced by this beautiful drop top example. Powered by a big cube 389 with 335 horsepower, and painted in Tiger Gold, it’s an excellent example of a car that helped start muscle car era. This classic Poncho has all of the “show” with plenty of “go” to back it up! So it’s dripping with style and has a ton of power — there’s no going wrong with this GTO.
This particular car not only has the 389, it has the factory 4bbl carb. The powerful engine is backed by an automatic 2-speed, which is crazy to think about — but the rear gearing makes it possible.
Over 11,000 1965 GTO convertibles were made, but it’s unknown exactly how many were made in the very unique, very cool Tiger Gold paint color. The color is special order, and it’s sometimes called “Hurst Gold”, but that’s not quite right. The closest guess on production would be about 500 made in this color, with around 100 being convertibles, so odds are, you haven’t seen one of these in person.
