For customs, street rods, traditionals and hot rods of all sorts (as long as they’re ’63 and older vintage) the first weekend of April means Austin. As in Austin, Texas, where for a few days, the capital of Texas becomes the capital of hot rods.
We’re talking about the Lonestar Roundup. Crank ‘em up, drive ‘em in, rawhide.
This year marked the 12th year for a show that has grown from a reason to get some pals together and cruise the town and gather at a high school football field to a two day Texas sized event. The key word there is ‘event’ as the Lonestar Roundup is a whole bunch more than just a show. While at the show, there’s music, a swap meet, mini-bike races and plenty of great food and stands. Then once the sun starts to slide down, the rods take over Austin streets.
At night, it’s like part two of the show. More music, more food and cruising all over Austin. Ground zero of evening action takes place on South Congress Street where rods are parked at Jo’s Coffee and the Continental Club. It’s tough to get a spot on the street to park, but once you’re there you can soak in the action.
Make plans for the teenage years of the Roundup which is already scheduled for April 5-6. For now, here’s a few pics of the action to get you fired up to finish your project!
