The 2012 Speedweeks Experience

By Ben Shelton

Growing up as a kid who worshipped racing more than life itself, I always dreamed of getting to go to the Florida Speedweeks in February. I read magazines, racing papers and anything else that I could get my hands on that had anything to do with Speedweeks coverage. I even took it to a whole different level as I read my favorite articles over and over to make sure I had not missed some treasured detail of the annual pilgrimage to Florida. Whether…

Concession Stand Abuse

By: Ben Shelton

Each year I attend over a hundred racing events around the country covering various types of motorsports. Whether I’m at a dirt track, NASCAR race or NHRA event, I enjoy getting to see what each facet of the racing world has to offer. During downtime at the different venues I always walk around and take note of things like the family friendliness of the facility, the layout, track prep, cleanliness and even the prices of food and drinks at the concession stand. Now while concession stand prices…

NASCAR: Getting Back To Good Again

By Ben Shelton

Every form of motorsports has been subject to the rigors and torment of our struggling economy for the past few years, but perhaps the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has felt the hardships more than anyone else. It’s been a bumpy ride for the tracks, teams and sanctioning body, and as of right now it doesn’t seem that there is any clear cut answer as to when it will fully get back on track.

Maybe I’m just another yahoo with insane thoughts, but…

Billy Moyer Jr: Emerging From The Shadow

By Ben Shelton

Many times in our sport we see siblings, children, and other relatives of famous drivers battling the shadows cast by the accomplishments of their relatives. Of course, most prominently in the motorsports world is NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who every day of his life is measured against the accomplishments of his legendary father.  Just like it’s not fair to compare Earnhardt Jr. to Senior, the same applies for other drivers throughout the sport, including Batesville, Arkansas Dirt Late Model competitor Billy Moyer…

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

By: Ben Shelton

Not only do I work in the motorsports industry, but I am also a race fan in every sense of the word. Most people in this industry focus on one key area, but for me, I’ve always prided myself on focusing on motorsports as a whole. I love racing, plain and simple. If there’s a race, and I’m available, then there is a 99% chance that I will be there. Each year I announce over 100 events nationwide for just about every form…

Don’t Show Me The Money

By: Ben Shelton

If you think about the things you hear said most by racers to promoters at race tracks or in phone conversations, a few different possibilities quickly come to mind. Perhaps you first think of a racer bending a promoter’s ear about rules or bad calls. However, when I think about the most common conversation between a racer and a promoter, my mind first goes to racers complaining that a track doesn’t pay enough money to the competitors. Growing up as a fan I always thought that more…

Ray Cook Wins A Muddy Ice Bowl At Talladega Short Track

EASTABOGA – The annual Ice Bowl race at Talladega Short Track has been the Frigid Bowl, the Snow Bowl and the Sunshine Bowl.  On Sunday it was the Mud Bowl.A persistent drizzle all morning left the one-third mile dirt track near Talladega Superspeedway a soupy mess – not enough of a mess to halt racing but just enough to make for challenging conditions in one of the biggest dirt races of the year in Alabama.
